About the Music
In many ways, this score maintains the traditions of horror film music. The dark, brooding atmosphere of the film lent itself to a score that was atmospheric and subtle, yet extremely forthcoming at key moments. One thing I did try to incorporate in order to make the score unique was the fact that the source of evil in the movie is a book called the Codex Gigas. While the significance is not entirely known, the book contains one full page illustration of a very devilish monster. Because of this, there is a certain amount of lore surrounding the volume, specifically that its author had ties to the devil and that his evil intentions were thus encapsulated by the book. This aspect of "ancient origins" informed much of the way I wrote the score. In many of the cues, a slow-moving, simple bass line is featured very prominently. In my mind, this linked the music with early church music in which a bass line (or "cantus firmus") was used while other parts harmonized with it. Also, I used a male choir in key points of the score. Almost all early sacred music was vocal, so again this was intended to serve as a link between my music and the idea of something "ancient".
